Carry-on baggage banned by Pan Am: Your laptop has to be checked. You can take a purse. What if your laptop fits in your purse? If that's okay, that man-bag thing might catch on.

MS Denies Wingding Thing, Again: Oh, my freaking god. Stop using your keyboard. You might actually type out messages of hate. Now, THIS, however, is just too creepy for words. The article says the image predates the disaster by months.

Examples of computer literacy I have personally witnessed in the last several weeks:
  • User is told that User can write to Person at person@domainname.com. User goes to www.domainname.com, writes irate email to webmaster@domainname.com because User can't find where to write to person@domainname.com.
  • Worker calls IT, complains that for the last several days, Worker's computer has been starting with message that the virus definitions need to be updated. Worker says, "It's okay to ignore that, right?"
  • User faxes over page printed out from website. Wants to know where to find page on website. URL is printed on page.
  • User downloads demo software from website. User writes irate letter to Webmaster, demanding that Webmaster remove the software from User's computer that User did not order and does not want. Webmaster resists urge to ask User for billing address so that Webmaster can properly charge User for plane ticket, rental car and incidentals to visit User's computer to remove said software. Webmaster instead writes polite email directing User to Add/Remove programs component of Control Panel.
  • Addendum: I have recently been exposed to an incredible number of people who seem to be completely unaware that it is generally possible to send a link or page by email, even without clicking on a button that says "E-mail this to a friend."

This is my first opportunity since Tuesday's disasters to even think about this site. Today is a national day of remembrance, although I am hard pressed to understand what anyone thinks we've forgotten. Kinda hard to forget when it's all I've been thinking about for days. I offer one link of insight: What does Bin Laden Want?, then return to our irregularly scheduled programming.

Maybe I'm just a slow learner, but I'm giving Blogger another shot. If it works for three consecutive days, the badge goes back up. Now all I need to do is make it understand that "show last three days" means the last three days, and not three days of its choosing. I keep telling myself it's free, but I also keep telling myself that that doesn't preclude it from working.

This runaround with Earthlink inspired me to dig out the letter I wrote to MCI Internet some time back:
...Not only have I have been hung up on, I have had a customer service rep put the phone down and never return (someone else eventually hung up on me). I have been told during virtually every call that "We're having problems with our system." I was given a fake name and number to call if I had any more problems (it turned out to be connected to a modem). I was told that the numbers that were appearing on my credit card statement could not be MCI account numbers even though they matched the MCI statements that I had received -- I then read off every number on the statement and was told that none of them were MCI account numbers....
And they wondered why I screamed at them.

Well, I'm kinda thinkin' that if you can make something good enough to win a Flash contest, you don't need the Friends of Ed books.
